Last month we got a ring notification that someone was outside our door. We don’t recognize him and luckily everyone was out working. This man however starts to try to open our front door, attempts to jump the side gate and won’t leave. He is trying to break in. My husband calls the cops and I announce on the ring camera that he needs to leave and the cops are being called. Our neighbor tried talking to him before the cops come and say he’s looking for his son and he has the wrong house but he still continues to stay and try to open the front door.
A ton of cops show up and turns out this man has dementia and he is at the wrong house. He’s only a few houses shy from where he’s supposed to be .
Long story short he’s brought back to his families house and we thought that was the end of it. Later that SAME day he proceeds to come back again - this time stealing a package infront of the house and continuing to try and open the door…we call the cops again but he walks back to his family house with the package in hand before they get there. Now the day is done and we didn’t see him for awhile…
Until today. We thought we wouldn’t see him again but today he was back at our house trying to open the front door. He came to our house 2 times and it is getting out of hand. We told him this is not his house and to leave but what do we do now?
Yes we know he has dementia and we have done so much to secure our home but now our peace of mind is disturbed and we’re not sure what more we can do. What would happen if he actually gets in one day?
We’re thinking of putting no trespassing signs and an Amazon package box outside to protect packages but it’s just getting too much at this point. He keeps coming back to our for some reason and we wish he would just stop completely.
Would a restraining order help? Any ideas on what we can do to just feel safe in our home without worrying that someone is constantly coming over to try to enter the house?
Have you considered painting you front door a different color and changing the type of house numbers you have? Like... keep the number the same obviously, but if they're brass, swap to black etc. Maybe put a fake plant out there.
Sometimes that's enough. APS is also a good idea, but just changing the facade of your home might be enough that he doesn't recognize it as "his house"
