I took a ride up 95 and went up Lee Canyon Rd to enjoy the temperature change and a little time away from the city. When driving down, I was awed and terrified at how many people were speeding past huge numbers of cars at 80 mph on a two-lane, 55 mph speed limit, steep mountain road. I was in a pack of cars going 65 mph, a safe and reasonable speed (10 over) in my opinion, considering the steep grade, I used my transmission to maintain speed and avoid chewing up or overheating my brakes. I like to drive fast as much as the next person, but speeding down a mountain is suicidal, in my opinion.
I saw at least three guys in big pickups and a few cars speeding past about eight (possibly more) cars, doing at least 80 mph downhill. There was no way they would have been able to avoid a fiery wreck, likely killing someone unlucky enough to be coming up the mountain at the wrong time.
This was an unnerving level of unsafe, even by Vegas standards.
For those more experienced with those roads, how often are there terrible head-on wrecks from this kind of shit on that road?
