“$20” upgrade for rooms

I read up on getting discounted upgrades by slipping $20 between your drivers license/credit card and asking about any available complimentary upgrades.
I used it a couple of times at Bally’s and Paris, but that was a while ago. I would think that the price has gone up, but does the technique still work?
