Let's assume that in the future, we are able to prevent carnivorous animals from hunting. Perhaps we can modify their genes so that the become herbivorous. Perhaps we can grow meat-trees they can eat instead of prey. Question is: do you think we should do it?
I think the argument for it is quite obvious.
Carnivorous animals cause unimaginable amount of suffering. Who knows how many millions or billions of animals are murdered a year. And obviously, it doesn't matter for a sheep if it's being killed by a human or by a wolf. We could prevent all that pain. We could save billions of sentient beings from a life of fear and vigilance, cut short by a brutal death.
I can see some arguments against it, so I'll address them now:
It would upset the natural balance.
I assume we could at least partially predict and prevent the negative consequences. And more importantly - how horrible would the consequences have to be to outweigh the pain of billions of animals? Finally, it's not a solution that could be implemented in a day, we would have time to modify it or withdraw, have any unforseen problems occured.
It is not our place to do it.
I understand the worry of imposing our value system on other species, especially on an anarchist subreddit. However, I believe that when we see prey fight for their life, when we see them mad in fear, we don't need them them to speak, to know that they want to be saved. Anarchism, as I understand it, is not against helping those who need help.
I wonder what do people here think. Do you agree with me? If not, why? If yes, how can we work towards this goal?
