Not really sure how to articulate this properly, but I came to a realization recently and thought it was amusing enough to share.
I recently realized that every time I would turn something down from a family member with just a "no thank you!" the person offering would take the meaning as "thank you but I can't eat that" and never offer that specific food again in the future.
This has been going on for a long time without me really catching on, and to compound the situation I almost never eat at other peoples homes... so this led to the interesting situation of said family member offering me increasingly odd items as time wore on in an ongoing attempt to be hospitable. (think pimentos, unsalted saltines, cheese slices...)
Eventually she hazarded the question "What's in french fries you can't have, SCWcc?" and I responded "Oh, nothing, I'm just not hungry." and I'm pretty sure we both had a simultaneous 'OH' moment about the whole thing. This is what happens when awkwardness runs in your family, folks. :P
I feel really guilty for not clearing things up sooner tbh, it was probably thoroughly confusing- I'd turned down a pretty damn long laundry list of foods, from fresh fruit and veggies down to bread and rice. It probably seemed like I lived off air or something lmao. At the same time I found it really damn sweet that she never gave up on trying to find something she could feed me- I'd imagine a lot of people would have just given up at some point!
At any rate I'll be sure to be a little more articulate from now on. Just thought the whole situation was rather funny in retrospect- have you guys ever had any interesting misunderstandings stemming from your veganism?
Tl;dr accidentally made my family think i was a breathatarian.
