I'm a 20M gay and an international student in Canada and I've been vegetarian all my life (born in a vegetarian family). After getting this subreddit reccomended to me by Reddit and reading through posts, I've realized how cruel the dairy and egg industry is. I was under the impression that I'm not killing any animals so being a vegetarian is "good enough" but after reading through the tortures that animals have to face just to get me milk, cheese and eggs, I've decided that I'll go vegan!
Obviously it won't be a 1 day process, I literally have cheese and chocolates in my fridge rn. I also unfortunately love cheese, cakes, milk, chocolates, pizza etc but there definitely are alternatives. It might cost me maybe $50-$100 extra a month (no $2 1kg frozen peroiges, no $1/liter milk, no $3 frozen pizzas) but I see it as a donation to save animals. I'll get a second job and also cut extra expenses to cover these! If nothing works, I can just steal a little from the grocery store /s
Other hard part will be adapting to alternatives and accepting the facts that a lot of my favorite foods (especially the ones I eat out at restaurants) might have to be replaced and given up. I'll slowly but surely go all vegan! I'm starting by buying alternative milk and vegan cheese tomorrow. I just have to get rid of 3 things, milk products, egg products and honey and then I'm golden! I'm so excited! It's like a coming out journey once again!
I've also told all my family members and they're supportive (they all are vegetarian) and hearing about the cruelty in the dairy industry they all have promised that they'll try and eventually become vegan too!
I'd appreciate more advice and help in this journey! Love you all cuties:)))
Edit: Thank you for such an overwhelming support! This is exactly the motivation I was looking for to become vegan, I won't fail y'all, I'm vegan now and super proud!!!!
This is exactly the kind of support I got from the LGBTQ community online as a young teen which made me come to terms with my sexuality and I'm so glad that the Vegan community is as uplifting too! 🌱❤️
