Moral Dilemma
Post Body

My dog is probably one of the most anti plant food dogs there are. The only plant food that he reluctantly eats, is peanut butter. I tried all the plant based brands I could get, none he would eat. He would rather leave it alone and starve, which he did. After a couple of days I stopped. And I have tried this several times. So I buy regular canned and dry dog food. It does not directly support the animal agriculture industry, no additional animals are killed. That food is made by sending that which the civilized humans won't eat, to rendering plants. Which would be the leftover carcasses coming out of slaughterhouses. The places that mentally damage its workers and significantly increase their health risks for diseases such as diabetes and cancer (pathogenic viruses are the cause).

Not only is this food of low quality, 3/4ths of the time it comes putrified. You can smell it. Which I do particularly when I heat it up. My dogs health risks are significantly increased, and several times already had adverse health events.

  1. If I were to buy whole mutilated, tortured and slaughtered chickens, 1 would last 3 days. Meaning 122 chickens killed per year. Assuming he lives 8 more years, that would be 973 chickens. So I would be running a small faction of a medium size factory farm.
  2. I would be bringing antibiotic resistant bacteria and pathogenic viruses into the house. Of which the conditions that chickens and pigs are forced in, are the most likely culprit to cause the next pandemic as organizations such as the CDC say (e.g. from strains such as H1N1, H5N1, etc), outside of wet markets. Being patient zero is not one of my interests.
  3. I would further have to find a way to mix it with plants and turn it into the cubes that come in dog food, otherwise he would eat around the plants that are required to meet all nutritional requirements. I am not interested in handling that which I find morally unjustifiable (in nearly all circumstances - and in the circumstances where it can be justified for humans, almost none apply to modern society).

Meaning, this is a question of externalizing the suffering of one dog, for almost 1000 lives. And the dilemma is that I care a lot for my dog. While unputrified higher quality food does not guarantee favorable health outcomes, in the available data, it is shown that the food that I feed him does increase adverse health outcomes for pets.

What would you do in this circumstance?
