You do not need to be 'smart' to get a 90 atar at all.
To achieve a 90 atar, what it really comes down to is how much you study. My tip for the future vce grades is just to study. if you study effectively, and have slightly above average logic you will receive a 90 atar guaranteed.
I'm not even fucking lying. you can be as dumb as a brick and get a 90 if you just try (aka. study instead of thinking studying is stupid and procrastinating like a sorry bitch.)
You do not want to regret not trying. You don't want see all the people that were of the same intelligence as you, or even less smart than you, achieve a higher atar than you just because they studied more. Wouldn't you hate seeing their name in the paper, or listed on your school's website under high achievers scoring a 90 when it could have been you.
Imagine what score you would have got if you had just tried like them.
edit - My fault for writing such a poor post. Some people have got the post confused. im not saying everyone has to aim for 90 . my post is just saying if you feel you can get a 90 , then really try, because it would suck wasting your potential.
