After refreshing Craigslist 24/7 for 3 or so weeks, I was able to find a place in North Vancouver for $1150, all utilities included. It's a 1 bed den, and the landlords are a really lovely older couple. I work in NV as well, so no bridge traffic commuting. It's an above ground suite, so nothing fancy, but not even a basement suite! I signed the rental agreement a few days after viewing the place and meeting the landlords, and am moving in September 1st. Although I was at first concerned this was somehow a scam, since I've now viewed the place, and am not paying my deposit/first months rent until they hand the keys over, I'm not scared now. PLUS, they live upstairs (with much proof as I was in their home and there are photos of them on the walls and photos of their dog!), so that would be silly of them to give me their address!
I feel.... incredibly grateful, and unbelievably excited, to move in. I've never once lived on my own and I can't believe my luck. I honestly cried after signing the agreement. To anyone searching, my number one tip is to WRITE A TENANT RESUME. I always sent this off with my applications, and they said this is what made me stick out. Write a generic resume, and change the small details that are specific to that house before sending it to them.
My big question here is.. I really want to know WHY a landlord, in 2023, would have a place for this cheap. They've lived there for 20 years. It seems unreasonably cheap, and it's just hard for me to understand why these nice people would have a place up for rent at such an incredibly cheap price? Has anyone else run into a similar situation before?
