I have heard a lot of discussion about Japanese game (and anime) characters being shallow archetypes. While I do like some archetypes, there is a constant argument that JRPGs lack originality in their casts, or worse, descend into pandering.
Especially since all the characters get some focus with the unlock-able side missions, I think vc4's characters are one of its strongest aspects, maybe even compared to other games with large casts. I'd like to know other's thoughts, and who they think don't fit common japanese archetypes.
