Self defense advice?

What do yall do for self defense? I have two shitty pocket knives with me, only one of them with a point that can actually do anything.
I've thought about a pistol, but tbh I don't really want the smoke. Plus, when times get rough and THOSE thoughts come around, I don't want an exit being that close to me.
Been out here for two weeks now, getting paid now and trying to stay presentable. Still not sure where I want to go, but it'll all work out. It pretty much always does.
