Hey r/usyd,
Thinking about diving into the MD program here (have an offer for 2025 lined up), but I want the unvarnished truth from those in the trenches, as if I accept, I'd be undergoing a huuuuuge interstate move. If you're currently surviving err thriving in the USYD MD program, I'd love to hear your thoughts
Looking for honest takes on:
Workload-Just how many Red Bulls are we talking?
Work-life balance Does such a thing exist? Is there time for a social life? What do med students typically do for fun?
1st year Clinical placements Worthwhile or waste of time?
COHORT AND DEMOGRAPHICS!! I always have had trouble making friends, leaning towards usyd because I've heard the cohort is relatively young (as am I) and a large cohort (300ish) allows opportunities for connections, true?
how easy is it to form study groups or find your people? Any clubs or events that help with this?
Interstate student experience. Any other interstate students want to share their experience adjusting to Sydney and USYD?
Housing: Any advice on where to live that balances affordability with convenience to campus/hospitals?
Overall satisfaction. If you had to choose again, would you still pick USYD's MD program? Why or why not?
Mental health: How do you cope with the stress? Does the uni offer decent support?
Biggest regrets or best decisions in the program so far?
If you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice before starting, what would it be?
I've got a bunch of questions, but don't feel like you need to answer them all. Pick and choose whatever you feel like sharing!
and don't feel pressured to write an essay-even short responses are super helpful. Hopefully, this thread can become a valuable resource for future students considering USYD MD.
Cheers for any insights. Figured you lot might appreciate a chance to procrastinate on Reddit for a "good cause"
May your coffee be strong and your impostor syndrome weak
