So, I've seen a lot of comments regarding Sargent and his current form. I've watched every Bremen game last season and this season and I wanted to share a bit of my own analysis.
Josh has significantly improved since the beginning of the 19/20 season. His ideas are better, his work rate is GREAT, his touch is better, he's combining with players around him more freely and creatively... he looks much improved. He's getting wonderful reviews from Florian Kohfeldt who has said he's one of the first names on the team sheet. However, there's no denying the awful goal record... but I don't think this has much to do with Sargent.
Bremen's style of play is abysmal at the moment. They rarely play in combination in or around the box and most of the crosses that come into the box are when Sargent is alone with 2 CBs (or when he drops into midfield and plays the ball wide and the cross comes before he's made his run back into the box). As a result, any real chances that come Sargent's way are usually created by a long through ball from deep, a set piece, or through one-on-ones. As a result Sargent just isn't getting the chances to prove he can finish. I believe Sargent is a good finisher as I've seen him do it when given the opportunity, but he is desperately lacking opportunities in front of goal or in danger areas of any kind.
I hope this provides some hope to those losing hope that he can be the #9 of the future (and/or present) for the USMNT. I honestly think it's in him, but I'm disappointed with the way Bremen use him. I think it may be time for him to move on from Bremen and look for a team with a bit more support for their #9. The style Bremen use also is pretty far off the style of the USMNT, so a move could help him strategically as well as with general form.
Have any of you been watching Bremen? Do you agree or disagree? How do you rate Sargent?
