Radiation can someone explain it, and why is my meter constantly dropping?

So far I figured out that old foods and drinks give you radiation as well as getting hit by zombies.
I know that tablets help decreasing the radiation too. But my radiation meter is dropping insanely fast like 1-2% every 30 seconds and I simply cannot loot that many tablets to keep it up.
So how do I survive if I constantly have to look for tablets and have barely time to go loot food and ammunition...?
