After some work and rewatching Brian Karis' siggraph talk a few times, I was able to (mostly) understand how nanite works on a technical level. It also made it clear to me why trees and bushes were such an Achilles heel for the technology.
And then 5.1 came out and it's fixed now. You tick a box for "preserve volume" when making it nanite and its just handled. It even handles masked materials.
What on EARTH did they do. How does this f*%king work. Witchcraft. Is there a technical paper or a talk I can use to understand this?
