Is the honors college worth it?
Post Body

Edit (12/17/2016): if you stumble across this post, I'd still like to hear your opinion! The app isn't due until Feb 1st so I have time. Thanks!

I'm a newly admitted student, possibly attending in Fall 2017. I've taken 7 APs and I'm a straight A student, so I'm curious about the honor program.

What are the requirements?

What's good about it?

What's bad about it?

I want to go to med school so will the honors college help?

Yeah, most of the complaints about the program are about HON 200B. I'll give you an insider's viewpoint though (shh...I work for the Honors Office). While they do legit believe that the things they make us do in 200B are helpful, the class does "weed out" students who aren't able to handle it. In all honesty, if you can make it through the first semester of Honors, you can make it through the rest.

I did ultimately find one or two things about the class useful (like making a resume, I'd never done that before), but it is primarily busywork.

Requirements: 3.65 unweighted GPA, 28 ACT or 1320 SAT (Reading and Math), and top 10% of your graduating class. Application requires a personal statement and 2 letters of recommendation. Applications are due February 1st.

Good: Priority registration; smaller class sizes (20-30 compared to large lecture halls of 200-300 or more) with dedicated Honors professors (rather than Teacher's Assistants who are generally graduate students), means you get more one-on-one time with your teacher and good letters of recommendation; those are the main two benefits there are other small ones like getting to check out library books longer, special dorm accommodations if you sign up for them, and dedicated Honors advising (in larger colleges they will often do group advising).

Bad: In the first semester, you have to take a class called Honors 200B, which is supposed to introduce you to the University and life skills, but ultimately ends up being useless for most people. For example, they make us do posters on competitive scholarships, which most of us will never apply for. They also really push study abroad. I found some use in the class, but most people don't. Other than that, the program does not have a very strong community other than during the first and last semesters when you're required to attend Honors events. Honestly, the greatest sense of community I get with other students is complaining about the Program, particularly 200B.

Med School: It can help in some ways. First, every Honors class you take is designated on your transcript and your thesis title (required to graduate from the program) is also on your transcript. Publication, especially as an undergrad, looks pretty great. Finally, you get Latin distinction on your diploma (in cursu honorum). However, if you're looking into going into medical school at UNR, you might want to look into the BSMD program instead. It essentially allows you to complete a Bachelor's in three years and enter the UNR Med School early. I don't know much about that program though, so you'll have to do your own research.

Full Disclosure: I am an Honors Ambassador as well as an Honors Student so I recruit for the Program, which is why I know the specifics. However, I always try to answer questions honestly from my own experience in the Program. Feel free to ask me anything else.

The problem lies with a singular person actually and you probably know who I'm talking about. We have a high receptionist turn over because of her.

Yeap. Totally agree with you. The majority of people drop the program during the time periods when the workload is most intense (i.e. their first semester during HON 200B and their final year because of the thesis) and they do say it is too much work.
