I got accepted to the honors college and BYU. Currently trying to decide between the two, so how much better is the honors college compared to plain UNR? I'm a nv resident so I would get the millennium
I am an Honors Student and all I have to say on the subject is that it's not for everyone. It's got benefits like priority registration, smaller classes, advising, etc. All the things you've probably heard about. It is a great environment if you learn best through discussion, but the classes don't really let you slack off.
My suggestion is to try Honors out the first semester and if you hate it, you can drop it easily. It would be harder to go to college as a regular student, decide you aren't enjoying it, and then try to reapply to Honors because of the letters of recommendation that are required. My saying is: if you can make it through the first semester of Honors (cause of stupid 200B) you can make it through the rest.
If you have more specific questions about Honors, I'm happy to answer those too.
Yeah. That's exactly what 200B is. I think it was only originally required for the people living in the LLC, but now they use it as a class to essentially get people to drop Honors. It's a lot of busy work.

Honors classes are more focused on discussion and classroom participation. They also require you to apply the stuff you learned during tests. For example, you might have short answer questions or an essay rather than multiple choice. Regular classes are the typical sit in lecture and regurgitate information later format mostly. Both have their merits depending on what you want from your university career.
As far as prestige, I do think that Honors lends more prestige, but I'm really not sure how it stacks up against the ivy leagues, etc. The one thing I can say about this is that there is a trend towards going to state colleges and participating in Honors programs for financial reasons. UNR is pretty cheap comparatively especially if you're from in state or get some kind of discount. So if you're looking for more bang for your buck at a state university, definitely do the Honors Program. But, if money is no object, then you can probably get more prestige elsewhere.
