This doesn't really apply for groups, but if I go out to eat with one other person, I much prefer sitting next to them if the table/seating permits. But, I rarely do this because I haven't seen anyone else do this and I don't wanna catch weird looks. I get that people like to converse with direct face to face eye contact, but during meals it's less appealing imo
If the person sits across, half the time I feel like I'm shouting over the table to talk to them. The other half of the time, I'm trying to avoid looking at them while they eat because I want them to enjoy their meal without being stared down. I am also self-conscious, so I can't always enjoy my meal if I feel like I'm being judged by how I eat 🤣
When the person is sitting next to me, it's just easier to hear them during conversation and we can both enjoy our meals without staring each other down. In addition, it is much easier to share food. And if I wanted to, initiating skin contact like hugging or touching their arm is accessible if they are next to me, not across from me.
