The all volunteer military is terrible for a number of reasons. The biggest is that the burden of military service disproportionately affects those who come from less educated/poorer backgrounds, either as a way to gain education benefits or as an escape from a cycle of poverty. These are typically less politically powerful demographics, so politicians are less affected by military action and so are more likely to view it as an acceptable solution to more problems.
I don't think it's an unpopular opinion to say that the US shouldn't be involved in so many military conflicts. If the military was staffed by draftees and the burden of military service was carried by the whole society instead of primarily individuals coming from less politically influential classes, military action would be a lot harder sell and should result in less military action taken.
And although it endeavors to be an apolitical entity as a whole, military individuals largely skew conservative. The military should reflect society, and a diversity of backgrounds and beliefs would not only benefit the military as an organization, but also the draftees, who are suddenly interacting with people from all over the country with all sorts of different beliefs. This would result in some humanization of people who think differently that we could all desperately use at this particular moment in history, but which is probably useful in all eras.
In the extreme scenario of this political leaning divide, having a military composed of people that leans one way or the other too heavily is dangerous in the event that there is partisan unrest. It doesn't take the entire chain of command to take up action in a partisan conflict, it would just take a break in the chain at any point and the complicity of the majority of ones subordinates. Even a small mutiny would be like gasoline in any partisan conflict. This seems much more likely to occur in a military units with homogeneous beliefs.
So yeah, the volunteer force is bad. If the conflict is important enough for our country to be involved in, it's important enough for our whole country to be involved in, and it should be important enough that the potential sacrifice of our own children/parents/friends (and not just the politically disenfranchised) is considered necessary.
Make going to war hard again.
