It's a fairly common occurrence year round, but with the coronavirus I'm seeing it even more often. A celebrity of some sort, be it an actor, musician, comedian, or famous businesses figure (i.e a Bill Gates type) will be involved with some sort of charity event. The event will raise a notable amount of money, partially due to the involvement of the celebrity. A news article or video of the event gets posted on Reddit, and everyone falls all over themselves to praise the celebrity's altruism and character.
I think it is absolutely unimpressive. I'd actually go a step further and say I think it's absolute bullshit. If you're a multimillionaire just fucking donate to the cause yourself.
A perfect example would be Dave Chappelle raising $100k to support struggling comedians. Who gives a shit. $100k is a decent amount of money and hopefully will help people. But why did Dave Chappelle need to fundraise it? He's worth over $50million. He could have just donated $100k himself without damaging his net worth at all.
I feel this way about pretty much all notable charity fundraising. Don't ask me to donate if you're rich. Do it yourself. And if your contribution to the cause was just fundraising then as far as I'm concerned it doesn't elevate your status at all.
