I'm used to redditors performing moral grandstanding on random bullshit they know nothing about. Usually it's about a complex social issue that the genpop take a simple minded single-dimensional view on, which is hard to refute because it takes a lot of time to fully educate oneself on the issue.
Sometimes though these random bursts of faux concern are doubly bizarre because the issue can be clarified by a single Google search. This Amazon rainforest bullshit is such an issue. I didn't know dick about forest fires in the Amazon when I saw the posts trending on /r/worldnews so I fucking Googled it.
Here's NASA reporting on it: https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/145464/fires-in-brazil
Relevant quote
As of August 16, 2019, satellite observations indicated that total fire activity in the Amazon basin was slightly below average in comparison to the past 15 years. Though activity has been above average in Amazonas and to a lesser extent in Rondônia, it has been below average in Mato Grosso and Pará, according to the Global Fire Emissions Database.
Slightly above average in Amazonia (combined with unlucky wind patterns led to all the smoke over Sao Paolo), but overall below average. The data from GFED illustrates this very well:

Amazonia is having a high fire year (~2010 levels), but not a record setting one (2003 and 2005). Everywhere else is seeing below average numbers.
Giving a shit about the status of Earth's rainforests is a good thing, but this moral panic is based on a lie. If you were happy with the status quo a week ago you can go back to not giving a damn, because nothing has changed.
