Having civil debates about subjects you are against is healthy and allows one to gain a deeper understanding of their own values. Unfortunately, most people are content in their echo chambers and are afraid of dissenting views.
Recently I saw a user on a particular subreddit i enjoy downvoted and insulted for simply asking a question. The question wasn't rude or condescending in any way, it was simply a question out of most likely curiosity. The people who did answer his question were extremely rude and condescending, and treated him like an idiot.
This was frightening to see, in a sense. To shut down any dissenting opinions and any challenge to their fragile ideals is something out of a fascist state.
