Unlimited PTO Policies are a good thing for employees
Post Body

I got into this a bit on another thread and am curious to hear the general response. My position is as such:

Unlimited PTO policies are a good thing for the employee.

  • Yes, I realize that not all PTO policies are created equally. I am sure there are some companies out there who have "unlimited" PTO policies that suck. If a company restricts the extent to which it's "unlimited," if they have whole swaths of blackout dates where time can't be taken off, if they penalize or make it difficult for people to take an adequate amount of PTO- that all sucks, but is a defect of that particular company and not the policy in general.
  • I also realize that some will say "but companies do this because studies have shown employees take less time off with an unlimited PTO policy." To which I say that is a YOU problem. You have unlimited PTO, it's your fault if you don't take it.
  • I also realize that some will say "but this means that companies don't have to pay out accrued PTO in the event of a termination," To which I would say.... so? I'd rather have 40 paid days off throughout the year for ten years straight than an extra 5-10 days of pay when I theoretically get fired. If you're not saving for emergencies that is again a YOU problem and not the problem of the unlimited PTO policy. You should not be counting on your paid out accrued PTO to sustain you in the event of a termination.
