As a viewer, I don't like pregame shows because I think they're monotonous, repetitive, and just unnecessary.
For example, every year, there are at least two weeks between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl. There are two weeks for analysts, journalists, and other kinds of pundits to give their thoughts on the matchup, who they think will win, etc. Yet, when the day of the Super Bowl comes, there is always a 4-hour or longer pregame show where the same analysts give their same opinions and their same takes on impact players. Sure, they try and mix it up by bringing on celebrities to give their picks, but I personally do not care who Snoop Dogg or whomever else thinks is going to win the Super Bowl. I just want to see the game.
If it were up to me, these big games would be played at 3 pm eastern time and the broadcast would start just minutes before kickoff. That gives people plenty of time to tailgate, have their Super Bowl parties at home or whatever else they want to do, and we don't have to listen to the same tired takes that we have already seen and heard in the two weeks leading up to the game.
I feel the same way about combat sports like boxing. Fights have their introductory press conferences roughly two months before the actual night of the fight (I think it's actually about 90 days out or something close). With that said, that gives everyone with an opinion about 90 days to share it and give their picks. When fight night comes, skip the desk chitchat, let's get through the undercard with minimal delay, and get the main event fighters in the ring.
I think that sports like tennis and golf do a great job of cutting down the talking in the booth or in the studio because the broadcasts typically start in the middle of the action. Even with soccer, I love it because the kickoff times are true times. If a game is kicking off at 10 AM ET, I can go to that channel at 10 AM ET and see the ball being kicked to start the match. No ceremonies like a prayer or the national anthem. Just straight into the sport that I came to watch.
