The "moral" or meaning of the story is that humans have an "inherent evil" in that, left without civilization we would quickly become violent and tribalistic, even as children. I disagree with this, as long as the basic needs of all are met (food, water, shelter) there wouldn't be much infighting or killing. The Donner party, for example, only resorted to cannibalism due to lack of food. In Lord of the Files, they have food, water, and a decent enough shelter for a tropical island. The mindlessness of it all struck me as odd as only a few children cared to keep things civil, when in reality I feel children would be too scared to simply kill each other. Even if they killed out of fear like in the book, I doubt nearly nobody would feel guilty about it. I feel adults would actually be worse than children in this kind of situation.
