This has come to mind due to me hearing about a new Amnesia game which has combat. I get the idea of surviving off of limited resources, but it makes the enemies less scary. The only exceptions I can think of off the top of my head is Alien Isolation (although the enemies you can actually kill are more boring then scary), and what little I’ve played of Penumbra Overture. This especially applies to horror games have boss fights, which by default are the most power fantasy thing possible. The worst examples of horror games that lose their fear due to the combat are Dead Space and Condemned Criminal origins (you could probably throw in Dark Corners Of The Earth, but from my understanding that game had a LOT of executive medaling).
