To preface: The song is great. The production value on it and the video is great. They clearly have their marketing together. I’ll definitely be following their material, going forward, but I’m just not sure the trainees got enough time to develop their skills. They seem to be well-received, so I’m not expecting this opinion to be a popular one.

-Their dancing is a little lazy and not exactly coordinated. Specifically…Yooyeon was criticized for this, on My Teenage Girl. She didn’t have enough time after that show wrapped, to improve this. All the members lack that crisp and coordinated, synchronized choreography you expect from idols. NewJeans executed this same “teens having fun” style in a way that felt intentional, this just doesn’t quite hit that mark.

-Nakyoung has possibly the least convincing lip sync, to come out of the past few years. She barely opens her mouth and sometimes chooses not to. (That said, she’s probably the cleanest dancer)

-Everyone looks a little startled and kind of awkward

None of these things are bad, in and of themselves—maybe part of the concept is that the idols develop with the fans? I don’t really know. What I do know, is that all of these things could have been fixed with like….six more months of training. It’s clear that they prioritized visuals and popularity over actual skill development.

Possibly the most unforgivable element, to me, is the highlight high note in “Generation” isn’t even sung by one of the actual members?! (Adora did it and the backing vocals, if I heard correctly). It’s their first song, it’s critical to highlight the members’ skills, right now, over outsourcing them.

Hopefully they get more time into training, instead of focusing on promotions; would love to see where they go, but right now this is a lot messier than anyone is talking about.

Edit: The opinion is supposed to be unpopular! Why all the downvotes?!
