Is it normal to have to reselect EVERY SEAT on every flight if you just change the return flight?

Post Body

So I moved my return flight from Lima by 1 day later. I had originally booked premium seating on both departing and return flights (a nonstop)non-stop, but after making the change of date and selecting my seat on the return flight apparently they removed my seat selection (ie not Premium) on the departure. I didn't notice until days later and they want me to pay an extra $200 for it.

Would this be something they would be able to work with me or would I be wasting my time? Note that I rebooked it as such that the ticket was the same cost at the end.
