LLM Vs. Master in Criminology: What would you say about them?
Post Body

Hey guys, 29 yo human being here. I've always liked human beings, their relationships, behaviour, thoughts, cultures, and so. In this regard, I got my Law Degree in a South American University, and after having worked in many different places (from law firms and banks, to public institutions), I decided that I just wanted to learn more about human beings, so I came to Belgium to start an Advanced Master's in Anthropology and Development at KU Leuven. Having this said, I just wanna keep learning about humans through a different approach, but at the same time, I know that eventually I'll need to go back to working again in order to eat and live, hah. So, even though I've always loved criminology, I know that Melbourne's LLM is ranked as one of the top 10 LLM's in the world and I guess having its Diploma would make me a more desirable professional when going back to my country (and also worldwide, I guess so?), whereas I haven't heard much about the criminology department. Moreover, if I do the LLM, I know for sure I'd take the most philosophical/social courses (constitutional/human rights/international law-related courses) but I know in advance that I wouldn't be passionate about them the way I would be for criminology, mainly due to the fact that I already studied Law and I know what it's about. I guess doing the LLM would be just a means to live in Melbourne for a year, keep studying (which is something I love) and improve my resume, whereas studying Criminology would be something I would love (I guess so) and would give me a lot of additional knowledge about humans, however, I haven't heard anything about the criminology department. Where would you advise me to go? What have you heard about the criminology department? Is the LLM on a whole different league? I've always been a good student and I love thinking, debating, and so, BUT I might be a little politically incorrect when it comes to my ideas, and I'm afraid that going back with the lawyers (after having being surrounded by anthropologists for a year) will make me lose a little of my mental freedom, you know what I mean? Like, after studying for months about several different anthropological perspectives from the 19th century about magic and witchcraft, I don't know how I'd be able to cope with engaging in debates with kind of shallow corporate lawyers in class, you know? Hah. And I mean, who knows, maybe in 5 years I'll need to work on a mining company with corporate lawyers cause that could be the only job I can get in my country (which is something I'd hate, but you never know) but I guess if that's what I have to do, then I'd do it, but I'm not sure if I wanna have my master's experience in Melbourne in that way. What would you guys advise me to do? Oh, and I didn't mention, but I'll be applying for a fully-funded scholarship from my country. Thank you guys!
