So after 800 hours in the game, I finally brought myself to doing the protectorate questline. And honestly. Styg WTF?
I don't get it. I understand the point of the protectorate being a totalitarian-military-regime with nazi elements in the mix... but why the war crimes? Why did Styg really have to make the Chemical Warfare unit so...barbaric?
I do get it that being an elite commando kinda makes you tough and battle hardened...but these guys are nothing less than psychopaths, sadist killers that should be rotting in prison rather than leading operations in the field. I did dig the protectorate questline until the chemical unit showed up. Why was there no option to use a paralyzing agent (midazolam gas???) I could understand infiltrating the compound, paralyzing everyone with the gas and then opening the front door for a true battle. Just like in junkyard. That sounds more worthy of a military dictatorship than the cheap war crime bs the quest forces you to pull off.
Besides the fact that you are forced to murder everyone by yourself anyways, whats the point of the gas?( also the loot gets lost anyways since the gas spreads in the base quickly ). Just inflicting suffering, and potentially ruining the life of southerners who might accidentally wander over there and be turned into muties, inadvertently causing more problems down the line.
In no shape or form did this questline make me want to do the protectorate questline ever again, and it made me more motivated to pick the free drones again every time. Yes, free drones were horrible as well, they also did chemical attacks, and executed people on " suspicion " grounds too. They can be horrible. But at least they don't release a biohazard that can harm southerners for a long time to come, with a terrifying virus that doesn't kill you but you wish you'd be dead. This is beyond cruel, its outright barbaric. I'd gladly execute everyone in fort apogee after I saw what I saw. The free drones cause seems so much more believable now its not even funny.
All in all the protectorate is truly full of egotistic megalomaniacs and psychopaths. The chemical unit captain's bs about dogs applies to them more than to any free drone ever. The free drones at least treat you kindly if you are on their side whilst the protectorate treats you like a military underdog. Never fascist protectorate again.
