What are the odds of the expedition camp being attacked while I am away?

I was trying to do Prof. Oldfield’s quest, when I got a message that the camp was under siege; I have managed to get the Seahorse turrets working, and have been dropping bear traps and caltrops to make kill zones; but how does the game decide I’ve been away for long enough to spawn an attack?
