Toshiba MG09 vs WD WD200EDGZ
Post Body

Hi All,

Just wanted to make this post as I wish I saw someone else post this.

I have 3x Toshiba MG09 18TB drives, and they are pretty much silent, occasional reading sound and a bit on humming on parity checks but nothing noticable, and i would notice as the server is in the same room as the TV, and I work from home next to it too. Using one as my parity drive and the other 2 store most my media, so they are spun up alot.

I recently saw a good deal on the WD Elements 20TB external HDD drive, and deceided to take a chance and buy one and shuck it (was a WD200EDGZ). Well that was a massive mistake, these things are SUPER loud!! Much more then i would have expected. The worst part is they make this very frequent (ever 10 seconds ish) *THUNK* *THUNK* noise. Its a low pitch bassy sound that you can't ignore. Literally driving me crazy. They make this noise while not actively doing anything too, its just sitting there not being written too, but making so much noise!

I think these WD drive are fine if you unRAID box is in another room, but if its near your TV or in the living room, or even in your computer room, its just to annoyingly loud.

Unsure if other HDDs at this capacity make this sound, but have heard that others do. Not sure if I have been spoiled with the Toshiba drives, but if you are wondering about the Toshiba MG09 drive, they are basically silent in comparison.
