Need help with HDD sata cabling and splitting and power
Post Body

Hi Everyone,

Putting together a new unraid machine, and I am really struggling to figure out what the best approach for sata power cablings is. Maybe there is a clear answer I have missed in the forum?

I have 12 sata drives, so my questions are:

(1) on a single cable with multiple sata conenctors from the PSU how many sata drives can I power safely? I have added more pushdown sata power connectors to existing cables before, but I have forgotten how many I can add to a single line coming out of the PSU.

(2) If I need to add splitters, should I use the PSU>Molex cable then a molex to 4x Sata cable? Or should i used a PSU>Sata cable and then add on a sata to 4x sata cable?

(3) If using a PSU>Molex cable, can I add more HDDs to it with Molex>Sata splitters then if I used a PSU>Sata then Sata>Sata splitters?

(4) which type of cable splitting is better, pushdown sata connector (example) or terminating sata connector (example)

(5) Finally, I mainly have 5400 drives, but if I upgrade to these Toshiba MG09 18TB 7200 drives, what is the max power draw I would need to keep in mind? The spec sheets seems to say around 10w, but that seems too low, I seem to remeber 5400 drives being 2A and 7200s being >3A, how do i find out exactly what this is for this particular HDD model?
