As a league-level captain, teaching newer players enough rules so that they can call and contest their own fouls is a challenge, especially since it runs the risk of overwhelming them.
Since ultimate is self-officiated, the game can kinda break down if people don't know the rules! So, I did some searching for different resources I could point my less-experienced teammates toward, and here's what I found:
There's the full rules, but it seems unrealistic to expect most league-level players to dedicate the time to really learn all of this.
There's 10 simple rules, but this is way too simplistic. The people I'm talking about already know these rules.
There are also the Intramural rules, which seems like a bit of a happy medium, but it's still 4 pages of pure text. It also seems like the rules are adjusted slightly, so maybe it's not a good idea to learn these rules when the league uses 11th ed? If you're going to teach someone with a dense rules document, it might as well be the right one.
None of these are ideal tools to teach people who are only ever going to play at the league level. We need an easy-to-use, non-overwhelming resource that presents the rules accurately but understandably. Does such a resource exist?
