There were a flurry of university rankings released this week. The Wall Street Journal's obviously got alot of attention. Ranking UF #1 public and #15 overall was a little comical and probably a big surprise to Michigan, Virginia, UCLA, and Texas among others. But the methodology related to student outcomes versus low tuition is actually something I can get on board with. UF hasn't raised tuition in more than a decade. Sasse plans to change that soon, so we'll have to watch what impact it has when the tables are leveled a bit more.
Like they usually do, there will soon be another big announcement with cheerleaders and mascots and Sasse taking credit for stuff he didn't do. Mori Hosseini and the Governor might even show up. Leaders are already in possession of the annual U.S. News rankings that are about to come out shortly. UF dropped one spot in public universities to #6. Still respectable and #5 is a tough place to maintain with all the Tallahassee craziness working against our reputation and driving people away from the state. But it makes for great banners on campus. Interestingly, UF went up one spot overall to #28 which is both surprising and good news. The overall ranking is arguably more important in the long run, and the twenties offer a little more play room to move up within compared to our peers.
I guess we should be happy to see these rankings in the news since football sure isn't going to be any time soon. We're a tennis and golf school now, and damn proud of it! Plus volleyball, gymnastics, baseball, swimming and diving, track and field...everybody else winning medals and trophies except the highest paid people on campus...our football players. Anyway, have a good weekend Gators. You're #1 and don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
