Taking a quarter off

I heard if you were enrolled in a particular quarter, you can the next one off. Is that true? I was enrolled full time during the spring quarter, and I plan on taking the fall off to get some pre-reqs done at cc in my hometown. How will that impact re-entry in the coming winter? And financial aid? I don’t plan on using any aid for the fall as I won’t be living on campus and I’ll be paying out of pocket for cc. Can someone with a similar experience tell me what they went through pls?
