Reminder of Reddit's sitewide policy on personal information
Post Body

Is posting someone's private or personal information okay?

No. Reddit is quite open and pro-free speech, but it is not okay to post someone's personal information or post links to personal information. This includes links to public Facebook pages and screenshots of Facebook pages with the names still legible.

Posting someone's personal information will get you banned. When posting screenshots, be sure to edit out any personally identifiable information to avoid running afoul of this rule.

Public figures can be an exception to this rule, such as posting professional links to contact a congressman or the CEO of a company. But don't post anything inviting harassment, don't harass, and don't cheer on or upvote obvious vigilantism.

It's quite disappointing that this post had to be made. Banning posts that contain an individual's personal information, even if such information is allowed on other platforms or is easily found elsewhere, is not a rule of r/UCLA nor is it a decision made at the discretion of the mods. It is a rule that applies across the entirety of reddit. We have enforced this rule consistently over the years.

It's frankly disturbing the number of users who have questioned if it's "a bad thing" to track down people who have been posted about and "see no problem with this" with some even going as far as writing "If you want him punished, you know what to do." Even after numerous incidents, people have continued to show disregard for this rule.

Reports on comments breaking sitewide rules go to the admins who take direct action on those matters without discussing it with the mods. A pattern of such behavior reflects poorly on our community. Regardless of what these individuals did, it is against reddit's rules to post public information about them.

These incidents have been happening more frequently as of late so this is a first warning for everyone. Anyone caught posting information that break this sitewide rule will be subject to a temporary ban.

To reiterate, do not

  • Post links to any kind of social media that contains personally identifying information. Screencaps are acceptable if personally identifying information is removed.

  • Post information about an individual even if it is allowed on other platforms or can easily be found online.

  • Post information about an individual outside what is relevant to the discussion at hand, e.g. where they live, where they work, where they go to school, etc.

  • Make posts directly calling for or insinuating a call for action targeted at an individual.
