Enrollment times for freshmen should be opening up in a few days so I think it's time to post a new guide on enrolling in classes.
There are two ways to enroll in classes. The first way is using the Class Planner which 99.99% of people use and the second method is Find a Class and Enroll which is a feature that is usually only used when the Class Planner is under maintenance.
Using the Class Planner
The Class Planner is a myUCLA feature that allows you to find classes and view your schedule. It can be found under Classes>Class Planner and it should look like this. At the top of the page there should be a gray banner that says which quarter you are in. To view your planner for a different quarter, go to the drop down menu on the right side of the gray banner. To enroll in classes for Winter 2020 make sure your planner says Winter 2020 at the top.
Searching for Classes
At the bottom of the schedule, there should be a tab that says Add Class to Plan. This is a feature that will allow you to search all classes offered at UCLA for that quarter. There are many ways to search for classes but the main way is to set the drop down menu on the left to "Search by Subject Area". You should have two drop down menus on the right that read "Enter Subject Area" and "Enter Catalog Number or Class Title (Required)".
In the Enter Subject Area menu, enter the name of the Department you wish to take a class in. For example, if you want to look at Life Science classes, you should type Life Sciences. You'll also notice that there are short hand codes for each department show up in parentheses alongside the full name. You can also use these short hands as well.
After selecting a Subject Area, you can type the course title in the Catalog Number or Class Title Menu. To find course listings for LS 7A, I would first make sure my Subject Area is set to Life Sciences and type "7A." If no result shows up then the class is nor offered for that quarter. Otherwise select the results to search for course offerings.
After several seconds, the page should update to show the course offerings. Select the course you are interested in by checking the box on the left side. The results should expand and you will have to make a selection of which Discussion or Lab you wish to enroll in. Take care to check the days the course will be meeting (MTWRF R = Thursday) and the time.
Once you have selected which Lab or Discussion Section you wish to enroll in, you will be prompted either "Add Class to Plan" or "Enroll." If your enrollment pass is not yet active, select Add Class to Plan. If you receive a Success message the class should appear in your schedule.
THIS DOES NOT ENROLL YOU IN THE CLASS. Every quarter, there are students who get this wrong and end up not enrolling in any classes because they think adding a class to their class planner is the same as enrolling. This simply lets you visualize your schedule. Read the enrollment section to learn how to enroll in your classes.
You can also view the final exam time in your class plan. Final exam dates and times should be located directly under the the course title. Be wary of conflicts when organizing classes.
We'll cover some of the other lesser known features of the Class Planner further below.
Enrolling
If your enrollment pass is currently active, indicated by the text above your schedule, you can use the same process as above to find your class and enroll.
Following the same process as above, select "Enroll" rather than add to "Add to Class Plan." This should bring up the enrollment window. Choose between Letter Grade and Pass/Not Passed for a grading option and click Enroll.
If you have been granted a Petition to Enroll number (PTE) by the instructor, select "Enter PTE." This should prompt you to enter the PTE number. Do not waste time typing in a random number and hoping to get lucky. PTE numbers are activated by the instructor and are tied to a specific UID. This means you can't use your friends PTE either.
Sometimes there may be warnings you must acknowledge to enroll in a class. This may be due to enrollment restrictions such as incomplete prerequisites or scheduling conflicts. If these warnings don't prevent you from enrolling acknowledge them and precede.
If you added a class to your planner earlier, you can simply find it on your class planner and enroll without having to search for it again.
Your class planner should now look like this. Notice the class is double boxed. This means you are enrolled in the class. If you look at the schedule from earlier, there is only a single box. If a class on your planner DOES NOT have two solid boxes around it then your are NOT enrolled in that class.
Exchanging Classes
Sometimes you might find yourself in a situation where you've used all your units and a class you want opens up. You want to enroll but do not want to risk dropping a class and trying to enroll only for that spot to be taken by the time it takes for you to drop a class and enroll. I know it sounds absurd but it actually happens. If this happens you can use the Exchange Class or Section feature to swap classes. This means you can exchange classes without having the overhead of dropping a class and enrolling in a new one.
In your Study List select the class you want to exchange for a new class by clicking on the pencil icon on the left side. Under enrollment actions select Exchange Class. Click on the link and the rest is pretty self explanatory.
The Other Way to Enroll (Find a Class and Enroll)
During my time here, I've actually met one, and only one, person who prefers to enroll in classes this way. While the Class Planner is infinitely more useful, it is still important to know how to use this feature because the Class Planner is occasionally down for maintenance.
Go to Classes>Find a Class and Enroll. As you can see this is basically the Class Planner but without the Schedule part of it. You can even see a direct link to the Class Planner in the top right which indicates you may be making your life harder by enrolling with this inferior method. Follow the steps from above and you should be able to enroll this way as well.
You will also notice there is an Advanced Search option here. With these functions you can find classes based on Meeting Time and Location but these will rarely, if ever, be useful.
Class Planner Tips and Tricks
The Class Planner has some neat features that not everyone knows about. You may never need them but it's good to know.
Making Plans
You can make multiple plans in your class planner. At the top of your Class Planner there are options to make new plans and load old plans.
Changing Colors
You can change the color a class appears in on your schedule. On your study list, there should be a bar of color on the top right. Click on it and a color palette will pop up for you to change the class color.
Adding Your Own Schedule
You can add your own schedule to the schedule show on the Class Planner. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you will see a section for Personal Entries. Click add and you will be able to add your own things to your schedule.
Plan Optimizer
If you're having trouble keeping track of which courses are offered at which times, you can have the Class Planner schedule your classes for you. Select the Plan Optimizer tab in between your schedule and Add Class to Plan tab. Click on Options to tell the Class Planner how you want your classes to be scheduled.
Search for classes and move them into your Class Planner using the arrow buttons on the screen. Hit Go and the Class Planner will schedule your classes as close to the options you've selected as possible.
