This job is already a high risk situation, interacting with hundreds of people, with a high number coming from airports, bars, and parties. It seems ridiculous to me that people who suspect they already have the virus are asking strangers to take them to get their tests done.
I've already canceled a few rides when I realize I'm picking up someone who is leaving a testing site, but twice I've picked someone up only to find out, at the end of the ride, I'm dropping them off to get their test. They make no mention of it the entire ride and don't even make an effort to ask for the windows to be down.
The audacity of these people to put others at risk who will be transporting hundreds of others is disgusting. I can sympathize that maybe they don't have another option of transportation, as a bus is even worse, but to make no mention of it is just irresponsible and a slap in the face of the driver.
I don't know what Uber can do, but I wish efforts were made to avoid allowing people who suspect they are infected to not use the platform. They have no problem letting us know if we are even with a fever and cough that we should not be driving.
Edit* To clarify, this is not a post complaining about having to work during a pandemic, that's a different discussion. There is a difference between accepted risk (working by choice or otherwise during a pandemic) and the fact that when you are suspected of contracting the virus, you are meant to be quarantined and not expose yourself to others. People who are going to get their test obviously suspect they have it, thus, why would you use a form of semi-public transportation, exposing yourself to strangers?
As others have pointed out, many people are being tested without cause of suspicion, but rather for work or visitation purposes. That's besides the point, there is nothing wrong with that, this discussion is regarding people who knowingly feel sick and feel they should use Uber or Lyft and do not at the very least inform the driver they are sick and give the option to take the ride or not. Or at least open a damn window.
