Learn From My Stupidity
Post Body

Hello fellow drivers. I have to share my current story because I'm at a loss. I'm angry with myself for how stupid I was and how I feel for this without realizing what was going on. I'm also going to try and share this as quickly as I can while I recall everything, but I'm just horrified at myself and my gullibility. tl;dr: never call numbers outside of the app.

It was this past Saturday, I was on my way and had my destination put in for my home. As I'm about twenty minutes or so away I can ping from a hotel to pick up 'Tracy' and she was just three minutes away. Great way to end the night, always glad to have rides on the way home. As I'm getting there, the person asked to call said number because their phone was about to die. I didn't think anything of it, phones die all the time, and they were at a hotel which would have a front desk person to allow people to use the phone if needed. I tried to call the number and I got the tone that indicated the call couldn't be connected, so I continue on thinking the sooner I get there, the sooner they can charge their phone.

Upon arriving at the hotel, I received a call from a 415 number indicating that the person who just tried to request the ride was using a fraudulent debit card. I continue to talk with the 'rep' and proceed to following instructions since he informed me that 'my time would be compensated for this inconvenience' and he indicated that in order to add the credit to my account, I had to add an additional card to my account. That's where I'll stop for a second. I'm dumb. I am 100% dumb. Looking over this, I should have figured this out. There is no excuse. This happened around three a.m. on a Saturday morning, so I had been driving for the past five and a half hours that Friday. I can't use fatigue as an excuse. I got suckered, probably lied to, and in all likelihood I will not get my pay for that week which I need. Like you need to help pay for your expenses. This is my only job right now, driving for both Uber and Lyft. Thankfully I can still drive for Lyft, but I can't even sign in to either my rider or driver accounts on Uber.

Basically, after this, there was conversation with regards to be apologetic that this happened, and that Uber values their drivers, etc., etc., lulling me into a false sense of security here. I never gave him my password, but I did update my password while we were on the phone, so I'm just confused. I really, was just not paying attention. The conversation ended and I went home for the morning.

I've been in contact with Uber support trying to figure out why there are issues with my account when I came upon a post on here about being scammed, and after reading through, I recoiled in shock, fear, and how gullible I was that morning.

If I could ask one thing is to share this story to help other drivers be aware, be alert, and never call a number outside of the app. Never. I learned this the hard way, please learn from my stupidity.

UPDATE: I was able to get access into my accounts again with support's help. I also have seen that my original amount is still pending, so I'm waiting for their response to ensure that I could still drive this week and not have anything stupid happen with my pay from last week. Thank you everyone for your comments. I am relieved, and if I can repeat this again, please, please, please learn from my stupidity. Not everyone will be so lucky.

SECOND UPDATE: Yeah, support told me that this was a phishing scam. Again though, my account is secure and everything is good, just uber lesson learned: be safe and alert at all times, both in and out of the car.
