I don't understand how to 'use' my gift card for rides.

I received a 25$ gift card from a friend. Sent it to me via email and I got the code and redeemed it. I have the balance of 25$ and selected the apply credit option but it still charged my card. How do I use the gift balance to pay for my ride?
