One area where we need to accelerate progress is in maternal and newborn health. Every two minutes, a mother dies from complications due to childbirth. For babies whose moms die during birth, the chances that the child reaches their first birthday drop exponentially. That is tragedy piled upon tragedy for those families—and our world.
These statistics are jarring and make it clear that we have work to do. The good news, though, is that we’ve made a ton of progress on understanding why these deaths occur—and developing promising solutions and tools to prevent them. For example:
âž¡ Researchers have found novel maternal health treatments for issues like postpartum hemorrhaging as well as infections during pregnancy
âž¡Access to hyper-detailed information about which pathogens are causing deaths are guiding the development of improved treatments and vaccines
➡New research on a baby’s gut microbiome gives us the tools to aid nutrition and help improve child mortality rates.
The challenge now is to make sure these insights and innovations reach the communities that need them most. If they do, we can save the lives of 1,000 more mothers and babies every day through the end of the decade. Read the rest of the report to learn how.
