Bad at Basics: "Only 1 in 10 applicants hired by BPO firms due to poor English comprehension." -- accurate or not, this is just so fucked up.
Post Body

Read this.

We are in a world where we are divided by bodies of water, spread across vast acres of land, there is one thing that unites us--communication. Our ancestors, did their best to bridge the gaps amongst people by devising ways to communicate, and now, we can literally say "thank you" to them.

As the simple means of communication evolved into complex ones, we're faced by a challenge--that throughout the world, the spaces, the gaps we intended to overcome, had brought in a complexity in communication, which is language.

The differences of the people from the various regions of the world created an array of languages, though communication is now possible, language, ironically built a 'barrier' between people. This make it difficult, but possible to communicate.

People soon discovered this difficulty, and have decided to pick one language to communicate. Let's said aside all the politics in picking this one language, but focus on what it can do for us. The 'barrier' that multiple languages created is now hurdled by one that's spoken if not all, but most people and that is the English language.

You might say, "I am not here for a lesson". But the idea as to why I've explained such is to remind us that the unity of one way to communicate, is being kept by a single language. In the world of science and technology, the language of numbers is independent of both written and oral languages, so this portability makes it easier to share and create technology and innovation amongst the people of the world. As the international standards recognize, English as the "universal" language makes it easier for us to communicate.

In order for you to become one with the world, you should know how the world becomes one, and right now, that's one language for international communication.

As a Filipino, English wasn't our first language. Though we have always been regarded as one of those in nationalities in Asia that are known to be good in English. Our previous experience from being colonized over and over again, exposed us to multiple languages aside from our own, and this developed a certain fluidity when it comes to learning new languages.

So, it wouldn't come as a surprise that Filipinos would shift from English to vernacular. However, in the last few years, though social media posts from Filipinos are mostly in English (to cater to a larger audience) their level of comprehension declined gravely.

This post is to reflect on how the fuck did that happen, and respond to what we're going to do about it.

I'll be back in a second.
