I want to dance in the rain
And recall how it feels
To be three and sick from a drizzle
To be seven and hospitalized for pneumonia
To be nine and submerged in the waters of the beach during the first summer shower
To be thirteen and sheltered under a ledge, wringing the damp out of my cream-colored clothes
To be sixteen, learning how to swim in a pool while the rain tinkles against the water
To be eighteen, watching the world turn gray and indistinct from my window, breathing in the smell of petrichor
. . . I want to learn how to dance in the rain and feel alive again.
