I had for years tried various jobs mostly factory and none seemed to last very long, the one year I had 10 different jobs that year. I clearly wasn't cut out for factory work so I had to find something different that could help my pay my bill. I was historically able to keep a retail job but they often didn't pay the best so I went in search of a decent paying one, I came across an add for a job at a car dealer. I applied and a few days later I went to interview with the sales manager, Mark was an older guy early 60s I'd say and had the "car salesman" vibe to him. I didn't really know what to tell him so I tried to answer his questions the best I could. He thanked me for my time and told me he'd call after he got done his interviews. A week went by and nothing, "crap" I thought to myself, I knew I had bills like my mortgage coming up and had to pay them soon so I kept applying trying to find anyone to say yes. I was young and enthusiastic I'm sure I could find a job, finally the phone rang. It was Mark from the dealership and he wanted to give me a shot and asked if I could come back for a second interview. We scheduled a time and I went on out and this time he hired me, I had a start date.
When I came out to start it was mostly just a paperwork day and it felt like they're weren't sure what to have me do so Mark the sales manager just told me to drive everything on the lot and do the paperwork he and other managers needed me to fill out as a new hire. Thankfully I wasn't on full commission yet as I didn't talk to a customer for my first few days, finally all the paperwork was done and the manager told me to get a customer. I wanted to prove myself so I quickly went and found people walking around the lot I got them to test drive a car and say yes we like the car. The young couple came inside and sat down at my desk with me, I was nervous and excited I finally had people sitting at my desk. Make came over and helped me close my first deal with them, my first sale I was excited! After filling out the paperwork and everything like that with Mark showing me what information needed to go where. Talking with him he looked at me and told me if he was my age he'd be fully trying to get with the wife of the couple when she bring their car in for service. Shocked at his brazen approach to his job I made a comment about him being serious and then he doubled down on his statement.
He added that how do you think sometimes women make such great deals or have such large down-payments. Mark was clearly from an older Era and attempting to show me how to do things. Now this dealership was definitely questionable at best and as I started to sell more and more I noticed marks comments, his eyes how he treated different customers. I was able to convince a friend of mine to come in and look at cars. It was warm out so she came in a nice sundress and it was clear Mark had shown an interest in her. She was in her early 20s like me and Mark was close to triple her age. Mark made it clear he wanted to help me closely with this one and made it seem like I didn't have an option so my friend picked out a car and I did all of the numbers and when I showed them to her she told me she couldn't afford it and I didn't push it any farther she was my friend. I went and told Mark what she had said and he told me to stay at his desk while he went and talked to her about it. She ended up leaving still without buying the car but I talked to her a few days later and she told me how Mark offered her thousands of dollars off the price of the car so she could afford it, all she had to do was try out the back seat with him. I apologized to her for him, and she told me had he been younger she might have thought about it, afterall it was a nice car.
After Mark tried to get my friend into the backseat of a car I began to pay more attention at work, I noticed the finance guy and some of his ways and comments towards/with customers, each person had their own way of doing things. Mark always tried to sexualize anything he could, the finance guy only ever wanted to talk about payments, the owner was happy to just sit around and wait for his next trip to Florida. Meanwhile his daughter in her mid 40s who he had made the GM was trying to run her dad's business while clearly not equipped herself. She had a sales manager who she couldn't control, yes couldn't fire because he was dad's best "salesman". She didn't understand the service side of it so struggled to keep that under control and going, she had a decent handle on the finance manager and the paperwork so that seemed to stress her out less. Though she was clearly stressed because she called me into her office to go over the sales managers first review of me. While the review of me was positive and she encouraged me to keep going, I could smell the alcohol on her breath she'd been drinking behind the door when it was shut. I also noticed while everyone said she was married there wasn't a ring anywhere to be found. I let it go for now, all I knew was that this place was odd but my paycheck seemed pretty good and they told me it would only get better as I learned more.
