Have you gotten a warning from Reddit or a Temporary sitewide ban? Want to know how close you are to losing your account? This is information about Reddit's strike system since Reddit does not seem to tell the users about it. Many people have no idea how many stikes they have, how many they get, and what they can do about them- I will be going through all of this here.
When someone reports your comments or posts, it goes to the mods of the subreddit you are on (and they may take action or not, but it has nothing to do with what Reddit does) and it also goes to Reddit. Reddit tries to determine if your content breaks the Reddit User Agreement, but they use AI to do this. The department that is responsible for all this is called Anti-Evil Operations but we will call them AEO from here on out. AEO has been audited by outside auditers and they have found it to be wrong 35-40% of the time, and Reddit responded that it was not suprised, they know just how inacurrate their system is. Many of you will have gotten a strike for promoting violence, or bigotry, or something else they do not allow. Lots of times, since the AI is so often wrong, your content does not even have to break the User Agreement and you will have gotten a strike on your account.
When AEO takes action against your account for breaking the content policy, they issue a strike. Reddit will give you 4 strikes which end in a full suspension of your account. They start out with a warning for the first one, then a 3 day Reddit ban, to a 7 day Reddit ban and then finally, for the 4th strike a full account suspension.
For the warning, forget about it, even if you did nothing wrong. You cannot appeal this. Almost everyone that uses Reddit for long enough gets one, do not worry about it. Then when it comes to the temporary and permanent bans, these can be appealed. They should send you a link with your temp/full reddit ban where it can be appealed but if they do not, you can go to Reddit.com/appeals . Tell them how you did not break their content policy (otherwise known as their User Agreement, or terms of service.)
Now finally let's say you have gotten a full permanent account suspension, and you sent in your appeal and it was denied, but you didn't really break the Reddit content policy? There is a trick that a lot of people, even mods, do not know. You can keep appealing, Actually you can put in an appeal everyday. Do not use the link they sent you with the ban message, that can only be used once. Go to Reddit.com/appeals and you can send in one a day. Do not use your link to the appeal again, that is a one use only. When you put in an appeal, do not wait for it to come back, it could take months. Just keep putting in one a day- I have had multiple people tell me that their persistance paid off, after putting in appeals every day (or almost every day) that in a couple weeks or earlier, they got it back.
If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask below. And even if they are not about the strike system, but just about Reddit or Modding or how to do something, I will try and find out the answer if I do not know it. Thank you for reading all that, and keep those accounts safe!!
