I originally posted this on ScriptGuild where it was promptly removed. This despite similar meta posts discussing community affairs, like the ones linked in this very post, having been kept up in the past. They also ignored my subsequent modmail so since they're committed to NOT having this discussion on ScriptGuild itself I am just going to post this here for you all to read which horrible terrible things I asked them to do (keep their promises).
Of the 5 mods, 4 have not posted a script offer of any kind in over a year. I think a community like this should be ran by the people actually affected by the rules of the sub, the people who actually contribute to the space. I don't think that's such a crazy thing to state. This is not intended to harrass the mods of GWASG, or to antagonise them. I simply think this is an important discussion to have and I think it's immature that they are so unwilling to have it. I'm not here to start drama or to stir the pot for no reason, but I've been posting on ScriptGuild for a really long time now and I don't like the way things are currently being handled over there. Here's the original text of the post:
Recently there have been a lot of discussions surrounding ScriptGuild's policies regarding material that features sexualised bigotry such as raceplay and particularly LGBT conversion audios. If you wish to read more about it this post discusses the community response and this post was made by the moderators to address the situation. It seemed at the time like the moderators understood the need for change, both in the subreddit rules and in who moderates the subreddit; as of writing this post the majority of ScriptGuild mods are not even active creators in the community themselves, which I think should be a (rather obvious) prerequisite for being a mod on GWASG. I have many thoughts about this original apology but I am not here to discuss the past. It's been more than a month now and nothing has changed. The post itself was unpinned from the subreddit and as a result it's harder for new people coming in, or people like me who have taken a break and only recently came back, to even know what happened in the first place and to be aware of any changes, which sucks because imagine if one of those people is down to moderate GWASG! (Not talking about myself here, just generally speaking.) And I am also not trying to hear any excuses of "oh it happened by accident I clicked the wrong button etc etc etc" regardless of why it happened it only underlines a bigger problem.
It seems like GWASG intends on dragging this out, hoping that people's feelings on the matter will subside so the concessions they make can be smaller. This is a tactic quite often utilised to work against change, and I want to tell you right now it is not going to work. People are not going to forget the display of incompetency, bias, unjust bans and petty behaviour in the initial mod responses or just back down over time. Something needs to change and it needs to change in the next couple of weeks for your original statement to have any sort of merit to it. You can't say you're committed to change and then... not commit to change. And this is usually where the "we've been busy!!" excuse comes in and well that's exactly my point!! If you're too busy to even make a recruitment posts for new moderators then you're CERTAINLY too busy to be a mod in the first place! The most obvious thing to do if you're too busy to draft up a recruitment post that, let's be real, takes about maybe an hour or 3 (and that's VERY generous) to properly discuss and 20 minutes to make, is to NOT be a moderator because you clearly do not have the free time it takes for this kind of commitment. You've had over a month to commit this <4 hour task which has proven to be too much, which is okay! But what's not okay is refusing to step down despite acknowledging that you don't have the time to properly execute your work as a mod. And in case someone wants to tell me 4 hours is not enough; if discussing how to even RECRUIT new moderators takes longer than it does for most countries' parliaments to reject or approve actual legislation then I'm really concerned on how (in)efficiently the mod team utilises their time. I'm sorry if that's harsh but I don't think I am being unfair in that assessment. And I feel like even for the few of your out there that share the sentiments of some members of the GWASG mod team regarding sexualised bigotry, this lack of efficiency in handling relatively simple changes should concern you as well.
The actual recruitment taking some time, I can accept, but the fact that no public recruitment post is even up and not a single mod, particularly the mod(s), most responsible for mishandling the original situation (like VM) have stepped down, is downright unacceptable and a sign that the mod team, however seriously they think they're taking this situation, is still not taking this as seriously as they should be. And this is not just my own opinion, this is pretty much exactly what the mods themselves expressed in their own post, and I quote: "Rules need to be updated or better enforced and we need a mod team that is more responsive to community needs." No update to the rules has occurred and not a single change in the mod team has occurred. Not even so much as a signal towards change in the form of a recruitment post, after more than a month.
So what do I want from the GWASG team? All I want is for them to follow up on what they said they'd do in this post. That's it. This shouldn't take half a year, or several months, this process can and should be handled as quickly as possible because a public call for resignation from the creators in your own community and an outcry as big as this demands a far greater sense of urgency than what I've seen from the mod team. Now I am not telling you to rush the process and just accept anyone as a mod, but I am saying that something needs to change NOW and not 4 or 5 or however many months from now. The timeframe for setting up a recruitment post is getting ridiculous and the recruitment itself should be handled with the utmost priority and urgency because as things stand right now, a lot of the people that actually contribute(d) to this space are unhappy and uncomfortable in how it's moderated.
