What is Pup Play?
Post Body

Pup play is a form of pet play (animal role play) where an individual takes on the role of a puppy dog. This is done by mimicking mannerisms such as barking, wagging, begging, playing with toys, sniffing/licking things, eating out of bowls, etc., for fun.

In the end, it’s a fun release, shifting into a headspace where one only focuses on the present moment. It’s about being a pup in the here and now, thinking like a dog and relying more on instinct rather than human thought and aspirations.

What Pup Play is Not

First and foremost, pup play is not about bestiality—any sexual activity involving real biological dogs. Pup play is also not about humiliation; most pups do not engage in it for the humiliation factor. They participate because it’s fun and a great release. While someone may be a pup, they might also be part of or like other kinks, fetishes, and communities. Finally, pup play is not just about sex. While it can be a sex-positive experience, sex is not the sole purpose of pet play or pup play. It depends on the nature of the relationship with the pup and any other parties involved.

Terms

Below are a few terms used within the pup community. Note that definitions can vary:

  • Pup: A person acting the part of a puppy within pup play.

  • Alpha: A pup who is a leader in a pack or over other pups, usually a leadership/guidance role.

  • Owner: Someone who owns a pup or a pack (multiple pups).

  • Handler: Someone who handles a pup on a leash.

  • PAH (Puppy and Handler): A regional/local group specifically for human puppies, handlers, and those interested in pup play.

  • Headspace (pup-space or pupping out): A carefree mental state that occurs during pup play, focusing on living in the moment and acting on instinct like a dog.

  • Moshing: When a group of pups gets together and "pups out" in a specific area (roped off or matted) for this purpose.

Is Any Gear Required to Get Started?

No, being a pup requires no gear. It’s a mental state, and it’s up to the individual how they want to pup. However, some basic safety gear for comfort, like knee pads and MMA practice mitts, is recommended due to the physical activity involved.

Other gear options include:

  • Collars: Some believe pups should wear collars given by their owner/alpha/handler, while others think it’s up to the individual.

  • Toys: Soft chew toys can make pupping out fun. Avoid hard chew toys due to human teeth not being as strong as a dog's.

  • Hoods/Muzzles: These can help a pup get into headspace and offer anonymity, but they are not required. There are affordable options for beginners.

Any other gear is for aesthetic purposes and can help pups get more into the pup headspace. Starting with cheap gear is advised if you’re unsure about committing to pup play.

How Do I Get Started?

Starting out can be simple. Drop down on all fours, sniff around, view your surroundings like a puppy, and begin to think like one. Watching YouTube videos on puppy behavior or reading dog training resources can provide better insight into how puppies/dogs behave.

Choosing a Puppy Name and/or Breed

Choosing a name is up to the individual or the owner/pup relationship. Names can change to best suit a pup. Likewise, choosing a breed is at the pup’s discretion and is not necessary to be a pup. It’s just additional flavor to the experience. Consider breeds with traits that align with how you feel, but remember that body type does not need to match the breed you choose.
