Post Body

This link will pretty much tell you what you need to know, but below is a slightly more thorough version of the idea, and the philosophy behind it.

This will be your one-stop shop for all things, "The Blend." I intend to collect all the present scripts that take place in the blend, and organize them by author. Those authors, generally speaking, will have links to any fills of those scripts present in the scripts posting, so from here, you should have access to all, "The Blend," GWA material. All works are presented by creator, in order of appearance

UPDATE: (3/1/23)

From here on out, I will be placing a synopsis of any and all new in-world phenomena in bullet points in the space immediately below, prior to the general description of the blend as an idea. I hope to keep this updated so that anyone who might be into the idea has potential inspiration to work off of.

Additional big phenomena:

Regarding Mermaids. The following are the words of u/dominaexcrucior, as they are her fabulous ideas.

Here are the details I established about mermaids. (Massive spoilers ahead. If you want to read the story, do that first):

After mermaids arrived on Earth they destroyed Canada's fishing population.

In June of 2019, upset fisherman organized a cull of mermaids (like how hunters kill over-populated coyotes). International outrage was swift and Canada formed A.M.P.E.D., the "Atlantic Mermaid Protection Enforcement Division" who are a group of marine researchers with federal funding. (Similiar to how marine scientists track and monitor dolphins and whales.)

How other countries are handling mermaids is yet to be discussed.

Physical description of these mermaids:

  1. Most have dark hair and dark eyes (but the colour is unspecified). Their skin colours vary, some have the same skin tones we see in humans, and some are a light silvery grey like a trout.

  2. Some of them can pass for human if they stay in the water, but the older ones can't.

  3. As mermaids age they grow scales down their arms and back, the patterns are unique. We believe the scales appear when she's between age 20 and age 30. The scales grow in over the winter, and by summer sheā€™ll show the pattern that will differentiate her for life. The really old ones have scales on the front too, decorating the collarbone.

  4. Their breasts come in all shapes and sizes. There's variance in tail length and strength. They have sharp teeth.

Other characteristics:

As far as we know they're strictly salt-water creatures. Thereā€™s definitely more in the Atlantic than any other place and itā€™s been theorized thatā€™s due to portal proximity.

Nearly all sightings have been of females, we donā€™t know anything about their mating habits or how they raise young.

We donā€™t know their lifespan, and weā€™re still learning about their favoured hunting grounds.

We know theyā€™re intelligent, they communicate. We know they had a form of verbalized language (similiar to dolphin screeches).

It is established that mermaids are of at least equal intellect to humans and can understand human speech but they can't mimic it.

They hunt in packs like orcas.

They kill and feed on other marine creatures like sharks, dolphins, and fish.

*-Portals! I am using u/dominaexcrucior's words for this one, as it is her very clever idea, and she has summed it up quite effectively.

About the portals:

A) Some of the randomly placed portals that leak magic are in bodies of water, and people exposed to that water begin to develop random magical abilities, not just bovine characteristics

B) Of the magical portals that have been found on Earth, the largest confirmed portal is underneath Tokachi Dam, in Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan. (Prior to this discovery, the biggest known portal was the Kashmir portal in India.)

C) At least four portals have been discovered in North America, three in the Great Lakes and one in Miller Lake, Canada.

*- 5% of the population beginning to take on bovine characteristics

*-There are an unknown (at least one) number of sea serpents somewhere in the seas.

Social phenomena:

*-Gargoyle firefighters

*-Blendr (which is genius and I'm still kicking myself for not directly mentioning in Like clockwork) is an online dating site specifically tailored for meeting arrivals. One of its features is, "surprise mode," which masks the prospective partner's species.

*-Three prominent, mutually hostile crime families among what is collectively referred to as, "the gob mob," include the Stormspears, Gloomdaggers, and Needleblades.

*-Healing magic works best on the young. It can be used on adults, but younger people take to it better.

*-Green Fletch is a major elf-majority company

*-Chork and Kishk are a pair of goblin foods

*-Earthshaker Inc is a collective of minotaurs, and is presently employed by the daughter of the boss of the Gloomdagger cartel as security for her brothel.

Description:

The blend is an open-source project that I would like to invite any of you nice folks to join me in creating. I call this open-source because I want to try an experiment in which the GWA community can create its own little, "mythos," like the Cthulhu mythos (without Lovecraft's rampant racism) or the SCP foundation (without everything turning horrible all the time). I figured this was a simple venue for all my fellow magic-lovers, fantasy nerds, and monsterfuckers out there to play with some magical realism, and do it in a shared universe (which I am a total sucker for). Whatever fantastic element is your thing, the goal is to be able to insert that story and, by doing so, help define the setting.

It is a high but simple concept made to be fairly easy to slide a story into - for...reasons, our world and a classical fantasy world have randomly swapped portions of their living creatures. Knowledge of magic has crossed over along with elves, dwarfs, orcs, and whatever else you can think of, and somewhere on the other side, you can assume people have brought a higher understanding of technology. It has been several years since the blend, and people have settled back into the swing of things on both sides of, "the veil," and have pretty much made peace with the fact that there doesn't appear to be any way back. This means that there are relatively small communities of classic fantasy species living in the modern day, trying to make their way in the larger human society. Go for a hike in the wrong place, and instead of a cougar or a bear, you might be unlucky enough to run into a chimera or manticore. Here there be dragons. You might know one. You might even get an insurance policy for, "act of dragon," on your home.

Magical colleges have started popping up the world over, but they are hard to get into and secretive with their trade skills. ā€œArcanist,ā€ is now a title, like Dr. or Rev., and some stuffy wizard will very eagerly correct you if you dare call them, ā€œMr. Gandalf (or whoever).ā€

The elves, gnomes, and other species with a natural affinity for magic have utilized that knowledge to create lucrative corporations, and elven investment is now a powerful force in both the private and public sectors. Dwarfs have taken up more physical roles as industrial workers, skilled technical tradesmen, and builders of durable appliances and machines that put cheap mass produced human crap to shame - just ask them. Centaurs aren't thought of poorly, but the world isn't exactly made for them.

Orcs, goblins, minotaurs, and other less, "noble," species have had a harder time integrating, and have fallen into places on the fringe of society, though the disciplined, martial pre-blend culture of the hobgoblins has found them an accepting niche in military service. Orcs have found places as blue-collar workers at best, and professional goons at worst. There is a thriving goblin-operated organized crime syndicate in most cities, which has sort of become the underworld equivalent to the corporate but often equally ruthless power of the elves. All of these are just the molds society has forced these species into - it's not like every, or even most goblins are part of the, "gob-mob," for example, but it is the lens through which society views them.

I am not so arrogant as to think that everybody (or anybody even) is obligated to play along. If any of the above ideas don't appeal to you and (assuming people haven't already made scripts/audios that contradict your ideas), replace them. I am trying to have as little ego as possible involved in this little thought experiment. Just add, [The Blend] as a tag to your script or fill if you think it syncs with the world.
