Single 4x8ft OBS Panel/Sheet to make Basic: Workbench + Vice + Router Plane + Saw Push (or Mallet). Tested in 5/8"
Post Body

The "Ken'yaku Kirigami" Workbench 48" x 24.5" (x 33" Tall)

  • Ken'yaku Kirigami = Frugal (high/unit luck) Cut, Folded & Glued Woodworking (Cut To Fold Image)
  • Oddly, Origami is woodworking (google why)
  • If your a natural/fluent Japanese speaker... help me out on translation

Inspired by various attempts by myself and others at the "1 sheet workbench".

Incorporates years work, of countless designers, over 70yrs , many far more skilled than I.

There are "better technique" & fancier looking ones, but I do not believe any use materials as efficiently as this design.

/

LOAD RATED (5/8" OBS)

  • Up to 75.5lbs per square inch, from looking it up in a building code manual
  • Table should hold a 265lbs item dead center, either shelf, without danger
  • About 10% more if plywood. IMHO: I WOULD NOT EXCEED THIS
  • 3/4" would beef up this rating (133lbs/sq"), more than enough for a pure sheet workbench

Current Rev 4, Workbench Only

Rev2 - Before FULL SIZE BOTTOM SHELF

Rev2 - With peg side, BUT Before FULL SIZE BOTTOM SHELF (made by other builder)

Diagram is sized to largest option (3/4") ADJUST FOR PLYWOOD/OBS/HDF THICKNESS USED

Alter/Re-Distribute freely, I have donated this design to Habitat For Humanity Canada

Basic: Workbench Vice Router Plane Saw Push (or Mallet).

  • Router Plane "round" cut out is mallet head "face" (remember its glued double thick)
  • Rest of Router Plane cut out makes up mallet head "mass" (remember its glued double thick)
  • You could get all, Workbench Vice Router Plane Saw Push & Mallet, if ultra careful
  • If you manage to get a simple hand sanding block, for sand paper, out of your scrap, PM ME

From A Single 4x8ft OBS Panel/Sheet Tested in 5/8"

Optional:

2x 1/4" x 24" x 48" Pegboards

  1. One Cut in half > fasten to inside of legs, of each short side
  2. Second > fasten to inside of legs, back of long side (48" side "wide")

Edit: I had to fix Saw Push \"push tab\" & \"mallet\"

You will need:

Tools Used

  • Tape measure 5ft
  • Compass kit (clamp, protractor/ruler/triangle, compass & pencil)
  • Hand (Push/)Pull Saw
  • Drill/Driver
  • Hammer
  • Set of Ratchet Clamps (optional)

Cost Estimate: Under $75 Canadian ($60 USD)

  • 1x 5/8", 4x8ft, Grade D, OBS Panel/Sheet (You can cheap out with HDF, NOT MDF)
  • 75x Box count, 1" Wood Screws (#6 or #7)
  • 75 Box count, 1" Nails
  • 3x 1/4" Bolts (2x 8" to 12" long, longer than 6 inches for thread 1")
  • 3x 1/4" Wing Nuts (or spindle knobs, 2x with thread 1")
  • 5x 1/4 Washers
  • 2x 1" Diameter, 1/8" Solid Spacers (mallet face/back, glued)
  • 4x 125lbs casters (or adjustable feet ... or just feet pads)
  • 8oz Wood Glue
  • 8oz Wood Filler (water putty 1lbs)
  • 3oz polyurethane oil stain
  • Sandpaper (Small pack)
  • Optional: 2x 1/4" x 24" x 48" Pegboards

Optional: uses 2nd 4x8ft OBS panel/sheet

Note: u/nugobbler3000 reminds me to split the tilt-out in to "2 leafs" meeting in center (we have the brace/support cut for that layout already! yeah!) so they are easier to turn/support when loaded with stored hardware mass. A TINY leaver to turn and lock it with a wing nut would also be little added effort and SUPER HELPFUL (thank you for the tip)

"Back Panel" FRAME Drawer Seat Sawhorses Add-On( )

  1. 7x "Green" cuts, would use 9" extra width (left with 48" x 1.5" extra "scrap")
  2. Use that scrap as drawer support/catch/handle. A little rough, but drawer is functional
  3. Drawer mounted under worktop or bottom shelf, "front" support fit into cutout (cut in to three 1" x 12" strips, braced/snugged across the space cut for drawer/etc to add back some strength) from the facing, targeted "Green"
  • Glued & Screwed multiple (every 6" of perimeter) L-Bracketed, to worktop/rear/side
  • Backed with, inside mount, 1/4", 48" x 24" pegboard or HDF
  • 4" Raised, Pegboard backed with a full width bottom shelf with, up to, 8 separators/cubbies
  • Shelf is 3" deep, backed by the pegboard panel itself (Unless you cut a 5th "Green" to lift it & pegboard 3" more, 6th to back it)
  • Each Cubby half backed by a cut separator, floored by worktop, topped by shelf (4"x6"x3" cubbies)
  • Cubby can be doored, > cut a, up to, 7th "Green" to door it (Cut to fit cubby front add door hinge)
  • Plus a top mounted full length, Single leaf/slide, Tilt-out Hardware/Small Parts Holder (Cut out pill bottle holes)

Panel Rev 2a - Has

Added this, back with pegboard or HDF. Has Folding Sawhorses, Chair & Drawer

Mini OPTION 24" x 24" (x 33" Tall) Combines Both, in 1 Sheet

I just had to throw this together. Smaller, only the essentials

Note: You might squeeze out this, ok height, minimal stool if:

KIND OF LIKE IN PIC (thats really a small folding end table, works as folding stool):

A minimal stool of usable adult height

Images To Visualize Concept/Add-Ons

Pegboard back added to a different workbench, as visual aid of \"back frame\"

Tilt-Out (Split in to 2x leafs, meeting in middle)

Fancy... We can cheap out with small diameter/length bolts/nuts, over the "toy wheels"

At this scale you get 16 pill bottles if 2x 33" leafs, 14 pill bottles single 46" leaf

The parts used

The Folding Chair ("IRL", fancier cuts)

Supported my wife's dad (a near 300lbs man), when tested, also small when stowed

looks good! not mine

The Folding Sawhorses ("IRL")

They are NOT heavy duty, but they are small when stowed

looks awesome! not mine

Your Drafting Pad (15" x 10"?)

Simple/Clean/Easy, and it works well

drafting pad, also not mine

Idea for "simple" 3x9 (2"H) inch sanding block I found

I dont think it could be more minimal!

This one is le chiffre (The Number/The One/The Ticket)

  • Features a set degree 90/180 45/135 pair of planes & a radial degree 180 semicircle plane
  • like any number of small scraps glue could make this (even sawdust glue, molded?)

I believe the \"plug\" is also the \"palm or finger rest\"

Better build method:

First Project > DIY Tool Caddy

A little finer craftsmanship... but it will help you clean up

Cleans up on the go, can be moved off worktop & used off/on site

A Lot More, ALL FREE (But I did not make them)

https://www.woodsmith.com/category/shop-storage/

Here are a few that are supplemental to to the workbench, you could get all out of 1 sheet of HDF, OBS or Plywood, a few bits of dollar store: hardware & craft supplies

Modular Benchtop Organizer

Less Clutter, can be moved off worktop

Anywhere Drawer (Same one we used, but I made it simpler/no top...& upside-down)

  • its a single drawer.. it needs no slide rails (only a drawer stop "catch/lip" made of wood)
  • ditto for the handle > make of wood
  • mount up to 4 across the front underside of worktop of workbench (or in stack on 1 side)
  • mount up to 4 more across the front underside of bottom shelf of workbench

A drawer!

Adjustable Rack (I just didnt have the scraps/left overs needed to add this to 2nd sheet)

Plywood = Bolts = Rack

Making A Small Parts Carousel (Leafed Slide Version is "simpler", if less compact)

Hardware Storage, off worktop
